New Webhost Server Acquired!
« on: January 25, 2010, 08:54:17 AM »

I've been double billed on the ServerPronto dedicated server (our current server,) 4 times within the past 6 months... and it doesn't seem like they have any intentions of stopping any time soon. I'm changing webhosts again... quickly. I think I might have found the perfect fit, and we're hashing out the details now.

3 things that these guys will offer that our current host doesn't, (other than NOT double billing me on a near monthly basis,) for around $8/month difference are:

    * Daily Backups
    * 24/7 Managed Support
    * Continuous server hardening & security patches, etc. on a regular basis

It's not 100% in stone just yet, but out of the 10+ managed webhosts that I've contacted since Friday night, these guys have gone well above and beyond the call to answer nearly all of my questions over the weekend. Also, it turns out that they have a couple of technicians on staff who are very familiar with the Simple Machine Forum (what we're using) software... two former SMF Team members, actually!

I don't expect to see any downtime at all on the website over the next week or so, but if it occurs, then this will be the cause of it. If anything goes down, just keep in mind that it will be back up shortly, and we'll have a team of coders working on it around the clock to get it back up as quickly as possible.

Sounds good. So, is the SMF component separate from Mambo? I always thought it was one package.

They're separate.

Biggun:

A quick thought on this.

The biggest use of the website with the most time-sensitivity is the DKP site for raiding. Can you please give us a heads-up before you do the move? We may need to copy down some files/info for DKP and raiding.

On that -- if it is at all possible, can you please start the transfer on a Friday? That gives us the most time to between raiding to get the new DKP stuff updated and operational.

Thanks,

I don't honestly expect there to be any downtime at all... once the server is copied, verified, hardened, etc... I'll just point the DNS to the new server IP and that will be the end of it... worst case scenario is that we'll roll back posts an hour or so, meaning our quote pyramids will simply have to be rebuilt. Chances are you won't even know it happens, when it happens... I just like keeping you guys informed & in the loop from time to time... apparently I think of DotB as a second wife or something... /shrug.

As soon as I know, you'll know. I'm going to try and have it done this week. I'll ensure it doesn't screw with the DKP database, etc. during raiding times. With it being just a copy, I don't see any reasons at all that it would affect this server until I pointed the DNS.

Only if Thursday night starts at midnight. We're using the DKP site until the raid is over on Thursday. Thus ... Friday is the best time.

They've got the go-ahead to do it right now. I suppose we'll see how it turns out. If there are any issues with updating databases, forums, etc. we can take care of that at a less active time.

The plan is to have everything moved over by tonight, but that's also supposing I can get in touch with an admin with one of the domain pointing services that I'm currently using. I used some ancient email address when I originally pointed to this server, and can't remember my password... so I'm the bottleneck for now. I'll keep you guys posted. At the latest, it should be transferred by tomorrow night.

The links on the front page announcement have been fixed temporarily. There's an issue with the news submission link built into the website. They can be updated from the Mambo admin panel just fine, but submitting them via the "Submit News" link now creates "///" when apostrophe is used, & when links are submitted using the java page to submit them.

I'll check into the DKP site.

Updated known issues list: (This list is simply being maintained for record purposes. These issues are known and are being worked on.)

    * There's an issue with the news submission link built into the website. They can be updated as a workaround from the Mambo admin panel just fine, but submitting them via the "Submit News" link now creates "\\\" when an apostrophe is used each time the article is saved & when html links are submitted using the java page to submit them. (Actually, submitting links into the article will create all sorts of strange text issues once the article is saved.) *- I remember this happening before with our last server change. It was an Apache issue of some sort. Every time articles, posts, etc. were saved or modified, a few characters would be replaced with these slashes.
    * The Coppermine photo gallery seems to be dead. I'm sure it's just another configuration path issue... I just can't seem to find the file that holds that directory.
    * Statistics page doesn't seem to be updating anymore.
    * The automated forum post emailing bug seems to be a security issue. Suspected web scripts are being exploited in combination with our forum mailing module to send out spam. A queue of more than 75,000 emails was recently cleared from the email cache, that were suspected to be created using this vulnerability.

I think I tracked this one down and flipped the setting we needed flipped to stop the slashing.
